How to Turn Sidekick Into a Real Co-Pilot for Your Shopify Store

A week ago, I was in Toronto for dotdev 2026, the two days when Shopify brings developers and agencies together around its technical roadmap. Two days, one message that kept coming up across sessions: Sidekick isn’t just a chatbot tucked into a corner of the admin anymore. Shopify is now positioning it as a co-pilot, something that makes decisions and takes concrete actions in your store, not just a tool that answers questions.

That’s a real shift in posture, the same one I described in our article on agentic commerce: AI no longer just answers, it acts. And like any shift like that, it doesn’t apply to everyone automatically at the same time.

The problem: a co-pilot needs a cockpit that’s ready

Sidekick is only as good as what it can see and what you let it touch. It’s not a magic wand that suddenly makes a disorganized store smart, it’s a mirror. If your sales data is incomplete, your catalog is poorly structured, or no app is properly connected to your admin, Sidekick will hand you answers just as muddled as the data it has to work with.

Most merchants we talk to have opened Sidekick, asked it a couple of questions, and come away underwhelmed, not because the tool isn’t good, but because the store simply wasn’t ready to get value from it.

How to prepare your store before letting Sidekick act for you

At dotdev, Shopify was clear about one thing: Sidekick is moving from “answering questions” to “taking actions” directly inside your store: drafting campaigns, adjusting discounts, managing content. For that to work well, and safely, three things need to be in place.

1. Give it a clean signal

Sidekick reads your sales, traffic, and inventory data to shape its recommendations. If that data isn’t configured “the Shopify way”, analytics properly wired up, clean traffic sources, the signal Sidekick receives is noisy, and so are its suggestions.

This isn’t just a figure of speech: Sidekick Pulse, the feature that proactively surfaces recommendations before you even ask, requires Shopify’s Network Intelligence to be enabled before it becomes available. Some of Sidekick’s most advanced capabilities are, quite literally, conditional on a well-configured analytics foundation.

2. Connect your data safely: build the harness

Since June, Shopify has let any app connect to Sidekick through extensions: Klaviyo, Loop, Smile, Judge.me, and about a dozen others have already done it. In practice, that means Sidekick can pull information from your third-party apps (your customer reviews, your email campaigns, your inventory rules) and surface it directly in a conversation, or even act on it.

That’s powerful, but it adds a layer you need to manage deliberately. This is what we mean by building a harness around the AI: every connection should be scoped to give Sidekick clean access to the right data, not blanket access to every app because it’s easier. It’s the same controlled-access logic behind the Universal Commerce Protocol on the storefront side: open up data to AI, but on rules you define yourself.

3. Keep a human in the loop

This is the point that matters most to the majority of merchants we talk to: nothing should execute on its own. Shopify built this principle directly into the architecture of its action extensions: Sidekick can prepare a change (a discount, a content update, a campaign), but the merchant confirms it before anything actually happens.

That’s exactly the spirit we try to preserve when we set these tools up for a client: Sidekick proposes, the human decides.

What this looks like once it’s set up

Once these three foundations are in place, here’s the kind of thing we see merchants get out of Sidekick:

  • SEO optimization: asking Sidekick to optimize a bestselling product listing for search, while keeping the brand’s tone intact, instead of paying an SEO specialist to go through every listing one by one.
  • Inventory and fulfillment tracking: asking direct questions (“which products are almost out of stock?”, “how many orders shipped last week?”) without digging through reports.
  • Campaigns and discounts: drafting a multi-channel promotion for the upcoming season, or tracking AI-generated responses to customer reviews in parallel, with Sidekick preparing the draft and you approving it.

And with Sidekick Pulse enabled, some of this work shows up before you even ask: recommendation cards, with their sources, suggesting the next action to take.

A reality check

None of this happens by checking a box. Sidekick Pulse isn’t available on every store or every plan, some app extensions are still in early access, and a good chunk of the value depends on configuration work that never shows up in the interface, but makes all the difference in the results. “Turning on Sidekick” isn’t a switch you flip. It’s a project, small but real.

Next steps

If you’re reading this and you recognize your own store (Sidekick installed, but underused, or ignored outright because the answers are never quite precise enough), the good news is that the problem is almost never Sidekick itself. It’s what is, or isn’t, underneath it.

At Junifia, this is the kind of engagement we take on as part of our generative AI for ecommerce work: configuring analytics for a clean signal, connecting the right apps safely, and building the guardrails a tool like Sidekick needs to act with confidence in their store.
